MME 880 Modern Band Pedagogy and Repertoire

This course will introduce students to the various methods and pedagogies behind modern band instruction as well as its repertoire. Students will learn about the foundational tenets of modern band, iconic notation, democratic instruction, improvisation and composition, approximation and arranging, and culturally responsive teaching. The application of these materials will be enhanced by lesson planning and the sharing of ideas for the 21st century classroom. 1 credit.

MME 883 Creative Experiences in Modern Band

This course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore the creation of sound and music in various styles using innovative applications. Students will develop practical strategies and techniques that can be used to design a range of creative experiences for students in K-12 settings. Coursework involves the use of a variety of easily attained items and software programs for tablets and personal computers that can be used in learning environments to inspire students to create sound, compose solo and collaborative works. 2 credits.

MME 884 Contemporary Instrumental Methods

Students will learn the skills necessary to approach teaching guitar, drums, bass, and keyboards in the context of popular music education and modern band. Topics for the course include comping, approximation, and improvisation. Students will learn the foundational tenets of popular music education as they apply to these instruments and better understand how to approximate existing repertoire. The course will cover the role of each of these instruments in a modern band setting and contemporary methodologies for understanding each of their purposes. 2 credits.

MME 885 Contemporary Vocal Methods

Students will learn the skills necessary to teach the voice techniques in modern band through the lens of popular music education. Students are required to meet a minimum proficiency singing in a contemporary genre. This course meets a modern band concentration requirement. 1 credit.

MME 887 Recording for the Music Educator

Whether you are trying to record your spring concert, grab a quick recording of a rehearsal for instant feedback, or help your students produce their own songs, we will spend lots of time exploring the various aspects of making a recording. The use of microphones, room acoustics, and equipment setup will be covered by...get this...actually recording. A lot! This course meets a music education core requirement. 3 credits.

MME 888 Modern Band: Composition and Performance Ensemble

This course serves as the capstone to the Modern Band Certificate. Students will expand upon the proficiencies and methods learned in an ensemble setting through collaborative composition and improvisation. The cumulating experience will be a live concert promoting the pedagogies for a modern band curriculum. This course meets a modern band concentration requirement. Prerequisites: MME 880, 883, 884, and 885. 3 credits.
